UNCLE WIGGLY: MAKE YOU CRAWL/NICE 7"

Artist: Uncle Wiggly
Album: Make You Crawl b/w Nice 7"
Teenbeat, 1996

I bought this 7" at the local record store; Record Dugout. In the store there is one row of a shelf dedicated to independent 45's. Constantly restocked from trades made by the store's owner at record shows, there is always something good. Since the store's record player is open to anyone who wants to listen before they buy, I usually can spend an afternoon searching, listening, and negotiating. This time was different. I saw the 7" and immediately knew that it was something special. Most people who go record shopping and actually know a thing or two have had this feeling. The instinct that tells you, "I don't even need to listen, this is going to be great." I bought the record for three dollars, the sticker price being five. Record Dugout's owner and employees are always knocking a few bucks off from their already low prices. I went home and listened, and listened, and listened. The A-side Make You Crawl is an overall good track, but the real gem is the B-side "Nice". I listened to that song 45+ times. It inspired me to go and listen to every Uncle Wiggly album I could get my hands on. They have become one of my favorite bands, but after listening to most of their albums I can confidently say; "Nice" is their best song. "Nice"is a garagey-pop song that is the culmination of their songwriting. The combination of their jammy nonchalant sound and the catchy pop chords their twangy guitars play leaves you wishing that the song never ended, but grateful that you can move the needle and play it again. "Nice" is a song that sounds like it's greatness was an accident, an unintended masterpiece that is left unexposed because of how unfairly hidden Uncle Wiggly is.
